Promoting Academic Achievement

As an academic advisor, the counselor understands the nature and sequence of the academic programs in place at IISA in the elementary, middle school, and high school. For information about these programs click on IBPYP, IGCSE, or IB. In collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators, the counselor

  • Helps students identify areas of strength through individual and group career counseling sessions using a variety of theoretical approaches and instruments
  • Individual counseling for academic remedial purposes
  • Researches and procures materials for teachers in order to advise or help implement strategies to meet specific learning needs or to assist in skill development
  • Introduces grade 8 students (and their parents) to the IISA - IGCSE course offerings through class visitations and meetings with individual students
    • Prepares and presents the IGCSE Parent-Student Night, along with the high school principal and IGCSE teachers
  • Familiarizes and readies grade 10 students with the PSAT and helps teachers prepare students for the PSAT
    • Reviews PSAT results and helps students interpret individual results
  • Coordinates with IB teachers to help familiarize high school students with the IB Diploma Program through class visitations and meetings with individual students, along with the IB coordinator and the high school principal
  • Meets with sophomores individually to discuss IB Diploma Program course offerings
    • Helps prepare and presents the Parent-Student IB Night, along with the IB coordinator and the high school principal
    • Assists in preparing the IB Year 1 and IB Year 2 Calendars and meets with students to discuss time management, deadlines, proper citation, and academic honesty
    • Prepares and keeps on file the "Letter of Intention" for IB Diploma candidates
  • Monitors student fulfillment of IISA credit distribution graduation requirements
  • Gathers and uses data to update and write the annual School Profile
  • Oversees the generation of accurate high school transcripts
