Acceptance to university depends on the academic record, merit, motivation, honesty, and dedication of the student, with full support of the student's parents. The counselor helps students formulate and pursue their short range and long range goals by
- Getting to know them as persons with interests and aspirations in formal and informal environments
- Providing equal access to career information and university opportunities for all students
- Preparing talks and activities that heighten a student's self knowledge, including personal and family circumstances, in order for the student to make informed, realistic choices
- Creating opportunities for the students to access to information about the diversity of the world of work
- Preparing activities that lead to an understanding of the relationship between school performance and future choices
- Encouraging students to consider taking standardized tests such as the SAT in order to provide universities with an outside measure of demonstrated skill, ability, and knowledge
- Participating in organized Career Days
- Maintaining contacts with the Aleppo Junior Chamber of Commerce
- Promoting use of College Board online opportunities for career exploration, personality profile, and college searches:
- Promoting use of a variety of resources in the counseling office
- Modeling effective use of technology
- Leading group sessions that impart basic information designed to facilitate the university application process
- Hosting visits from university representatives and admissions officers
- Holding a "Grade 11 Parents Info Night" to inform parents about the application process
- Directing students and parents to sources that offer basic information relating to merit scholarships, need scholarships and other forms of financial assistance
- Meeting with students individually; helping students formulate goals; documenting goals; and delineating the student's ownership and responsibility with respect to stated goals
- Participating in international forums of school counselors and university representatives
