IISA Course of Study

IISA is divided into four different programs of study: Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School and High School. Each of these represents an important facet in the education and the development of the child.

Early Childhood, beginning with Pre-School for age three, then KG 1 and KG 2, focuses primarily on social progress, preparing the child to enter the more challenging and academic Grade One and Elementary School. For Early Childhood and Elementary School IISA uses a fully implemented International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. This is a comprehensive curriculum that fully prepares students for the challenges of secondary education. Middle School (grades six to eight) provides a gradual transition between Elementary School and the academic rigor of High School. Individual subjects and a rotating schedule are introduced including the four core classes (English, Social Studies, Math and Science) as well as other subjects including Arabic and French. High School provides a true university preparatory experience.

Two complimentary programs are used, the International General Secondary Education Diploma (IGCSE) is the core program of grades nine and ten; and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is taught to grades eleven and twelve. The IB is a widely accepted and comprehensive curriculum, an ideal preparation for any western university. In 2006 IISA had its IB diploma recognized by the Ministry of Education for direct entrance into Syrian university. IISA is an IB World School. As the only IB school in Syria, IISA has a completely independent curriculum patterned after the best international standards in use throughout the world.

The language of instruction at IISA is English. The school maintains separate programs at all levels for teaching the Arabic language to native Arabic speakers and to non-native speakers. The school follows a blended British and American curriculum. It has an IB Primary Years Program (IBPYP) in the elementary school. In grades 9 and 10 the school is a Center for International Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). The IB Diploma Program is in place in grades 11 and 12. The Syrian Ministry of Education officially recognizes the IISA IB Diploma.
