At IISA our students are encouraged to be principled, self-directed, life long
learners who strive for excellence. The medium language for learning is English.
The Primary Years Program (PYP) is the framework of the Primary School Program at
IISA. Pre-School through Grade 5 focuses on the development of the whole child
as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The Units of
Inquiry for each grade are designed around six transdiciplinary themes.
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- Sharing the planet
At IISA, Everyday Mathematics Program, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 focuses
on real life problem solving and a balance between whole-class and self-directed
learning with an emphasis on communication.
The six strands of knowledge are;
- Algebra
- Data and Chance
- Geometry
- Measurement and Reference Frames
- Numeration and Order
- Patterns, Functions, Sequences
The Language Arts instruction uses research based programs for reading and
writing.
A leveled library is located in each classroom to help the students
gain comprehension and fluency with their reading skills. The Pinnell and
Fountas Phonics Program provides instruction so students receive a solid foundation
with phonics and word study skills.
As writers, IISA Primary students learn writing through the 6+1 Traits of
Writing Model giving our students a common vocabulary describing the
qualities of writing; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency,
conventions, and presentation.
The Handwriting without Tears Program teaches handwriting skills that
help students gain mastery so their writing is fluid and automatic.
